Curriculum Intent
At St Agnes Academy we believe that learning a foreign language is important in ensuring our children are exposed to different cultures, traditions and ways of life and to foster curiosity of the world in which they live. We want our children to be able to communicate confidently in another language and to be able to listen and respond to others both in speech and writing. We want our children to feel part of the wider world and to celebrate its diversity and rich heritage.
 
Curriculum Implementation
We use the aims of the National Curriculum to underpin our teaching.
to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
to be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the grammatical structures they have learned
to discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language discovered
to make young children aware that language has structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another
to help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries
to develop their speaking and listening skills
to lay the foundations for future study in Key Stage 3.
At St Agnes Academy we focus on French as our Modern Foreign Language. We believe that learning a foreign language takes regular practise to secure the skills and knowledge and therefore teach French every week for between 45-60 minutes. In order to ensure clear progression we use a published scheme as a basis for teaching and learning and adapt where necessary in light of our children's different starting points and experiences. We also use Duolingo for regular short burst practise and songs and extracts from French literature to enrich our children's experience.
Before a new unit is introduced, we revise previous learning to ensure we are building on firm foundations. We introduce new vocabulary at the beginning of each unit both verbally (modelling pronunciation) and visually (modelling spelling).

At St Agnes Academy, we have 3 measures of curriculum impact, all of which are essential in ensuring that our children make excellent progress, are ready for the next phase in their learning journey and are well-rounded, thoughtful and responsible individuals. Our 3 measures are:

Our children, through systematic teaching and learning, will know and remember more and be prepared for the next step in their learning journey. They will be able to confidently communicate in French drawing on a secure knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and understand and respond to others. 
They will have a curiosity about the world in which they live and have an appreciation of different cultures, traditions and ways of life. Through this, they will value and celebrate diversity and feel connected to the wider world whilst celebrating their own cultural uniqueness.
Our children will enjoy learning collaboratively and will be able to work with others with respect and tolerance. Through speaking aloud they will develop confidence and learn to value the contributions of others. In addition, through engaging in challenging and new learning they will develop resilience and perseverance.
